Interview with Alabama's Governor Bob Riley

If you ever wondered what an interview over the telephone with an important person sounds like, you're about to have that pressing need answered (scroll to bottom of this post for an mp3 recording of the interview I'm writing about here). Last week I had the opportunity to interview the governor of Alabama, Bob Riley, over the telephone. I used the time to get his impression of economic development in the state. I have to say he was good at promoting Alabama without sounding like he was making a sale--maybe because the state's successes have been quite legitimate and don't require any spin. Alabama has won big automaker investments, including final assembly plants from Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai; Toyota has a major engine plant there; and as the governor points out, the new Kia plant in Georgia is just barely over the border from Alabama, giving the state the chance to score big in the supplier game. (Makes sense, considering Kia and Hyundai are close corporate cousins sharing a great deal of parts between vehicle lineups.)

The other big thing coming up in Alabama is whether or not the EADS tanker deal goes through (see our August 2005 article here for the introduction). It's basically in the political realm now as to whether it happens, but if it does, it will create a ton of jobs and really cement an already well-known strength in aerospace for Alabama.

Gov. Riley seemed to be most proud of his state's advances in education (in worker training and primary education both, I believe). He does not try to cover up the fact that a lot of people still think education in the South, especially the "Deep South," is in the dark ages. Business leaders are educated people in general, but even they can fall prey to old misconceptions (or old truths). While I didn't get the sense that everything is where he wants it to be in terms of education, I also heard Gov. Riley telling our readers to give the state a new look in that regard. He's friendly enough that he'd probably be willing to explain things to you in person if you come down for a visit.

An edited transcript of this interview will appear in the November issue of Business Facilities. This audio recording, in mp3 format, is about 20 minutes long and only lightly edited. Gov. Riley is far from the first governor we've interviewed, but this is this first time we've ever made the tape available to the public. Actually, it's kind of a rare opportunity to hear a public official speak at length without any handlers, rehearsal, or post-production. I'd love to do this again with an official from another state, or with an executive from a company going through a major move.

(You should see a control appear below to allow you to play the file from within the page--if not, click here for the direct download of the mp3 file.)

  • "Newhouse/Advance Publications Are Working With GOP Operatives To Create Corrupt Public Images Of Top Democratic Politicians."

In Alabama, Bob Riley is being groomed as a potential vice-presidential candidate. Bush's/Cheney's GOP operatives are using the prison system to keep Don Siegelman from talking to the media about Gov. Riley's past and what he knows about Alabama's dirty history of campaign corruptions. When Siegelman was Secretary of State and Attorney General, he worked with all branches of law enforcement which investigated sham organizations, Contra drug trafficking, tax evasion and money laundering. The investigations found that much of it were linked to high ranking GOP campaign contributions in Alabama as well as Florida, Arkansas, and sometimes Georgia, and Mississippi. Siegelman is a very smart attorney. He holds two law degrees. He knows more about Alabama's politics than anyone, being the only person in history to have held the top four government offices in Alabama and he has first hand knowledge of how a White House backed campaign conspiracy works. This is a partial list of the skeletons that they don't want big media to know about: (a)The Bush's/Cheney's Staff (Rove) has classified information from Diebold Election Systems, Inc. of Allen, TX.) which was shared with Dan Gans of Riley's staff. This included Diebold software code and registers addresses for each candidate along with passwords and a method of accessing the voting machines. This was used for vote stuffing in several counties in Alabama in 2002. (b) Millions of dollars of dirty campaign money were used to defeat Siegelman's Education Lottery and to defeat his gubernatorial campaigns. The money came from big business clients of Jack Abramoff, Michael Scanlon, Toby Roth, Rob Riley and William Canary. (c) Several different National GOP associations along with some sham organizations ran by Robin Vanderwall, Preston Gates, Ralph Reed, Glover Norquist and William Canary laundered the money so that it wouldn't be obvious who the donors were. (d) The newspapers of big media giant Newhouse/Advance Publications (controlled by Billionaire Donald Newhouse) agreed to print articles hand fed to them by Bush appointed U.S. government officials to create a corrupt public image of Siegelman, and other top Democrat politicians.

  • ÒBUSH HAS TURNED THE WHITE HOUSE INTO A DEN OF THIEVESÓ
President Bush, Vice President Cheney and their executioner Lieutenant Rove have disregarded the values so cherished by the Republican Party. Their ideology have been to channel millions of dollars to those party members who have pledged total absolute loyalty to the Bush administration. This includes creating/channeling campaign funds for their elections, making appointments of the undeserving and/or unqualified boot lickers to high Federal offices and awarding large military/government contracts to thousands of companies that are owned directly or indirectly by his supporters. Many of these contracting companies are sham organizations and/or have no accountability.

We in the ÒSouth Eastern StatesÓ have surely suffered the most from the presidency of Bush. We are facing a very serious dilemma; we have a new strain of government corruption that is immune to the antibodies of the justice system as defined by the constitution which incudes: (a) Election fraud, (b) political favors for illegal campaign contributions (large oil companies, Tobacco Companies, Gambling Casinos, etc.), ( c) corrupt Bush appointed U.S Attorneys that spend millions of dollars profiling high ranking Democrats so that their offices can be freed up for a Bush operative and (d) Bush appointed U.S. Judges that removes the threat of a political comeback by giving maximum sentences with appeal denials and highly restricted correspondence.
